Forestry on Kangaroo Island |
| |
The plantation forestry industry on Kangaroo Island currently
consists of an 8,000ha estate, comprising Radiata pine (Pinus
radiata), Tasmanian blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus)
and a small area of Shining gum (E. nitens). There
are around 120ha of farm forestry trials on the Island, including
the local species Sugar gum (E. cladocalyx), Spotted
gum (Corymbia maculata) and Flat topped yate (E.
occidentalis). The industry is aiming to develop a 20-30,000ha
plantation estate, with in excess of 80,000ha on the Island
having been identified as suitable for production forestry.
There are four companies currently involved in this growing
industry on the Island. They are actively involved in developing
infrastructure to support the development of the industry,
including timber processing and loading facilities, to enable
on-Island value-adding and cost effective export of wood
products from the Island.
The peak industry body for plantation and farm forestry is
Private Forestry Kangaroo Island. Contact Anthea
Howard, or phone 08 8553 0427 the Committee’s Executive
Officer, for further information. |

View the Employment and Skills Formation Regional Profile 2004 |
| |
This profile has been produced to support the policy objectives
of the Employment and Skills Formation Directorate through
implementing and supporting activities that:
- Increase total
employment
- Reduce unemployment levels, and
- Promote opportunities for
South Australians to participate in the labour market
The Directorate has endeavoured to provide a resource that
is rich with data and information encompassing the demographic,
economic, labour market and education and training characteristics
of the regions. The profiles include data analysis and interpretation
that can be applied to strategic decision making about employment
development in regions. Where possible the indicators for
each region have been compared with the corresponding state
average indicator to give regional decision makers a notion
of their relative position or to highlight regional differences.
The application of the information in the profiles may improve
the capacity of regional communities to plan for and achieve
employment growth as a dividend from their economic development
activity. |
