  Forestry on Kangaroo Island

The plantation forestry industry on Kangaroo Island currently consists of an 8,000ha estate, comprising Radiata pine (Pinus radiata), Tasmanian blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) and a small area of Shining gum (E. nitens). There are around 120ha of farm forestry trials on the Island, including the local species Sugar gum (E. cladocalyx), Spotted gum (Corymbia maculata) and Flat topped yate (E. occidentalis). The industry is aiming to develop a 20-30,000ha plantation estate, with in excess of 80,000ha on the Island having been identified as suitable for production forestry.

There are four companies currently involved in this growing industry on the Island. They are actively involved in developing infrastructure to support the development of the industry, including timber processing and loading facilities, to enable on-Island value-adding and cost effective export of wood products from the Island.

The peak industry body for plantation and farm forestry is Private Forestry Kangaroo Island.
